-Proverbs 1:5
There's a saying that has hung on our wall for many years, even before our daughter came home, that we have loosely embraced as a family motto of sorts. It reads, "The key to a vital life is an eagerness to learn, and a willingness to change." In other words, we embrace knowledge in order to apply it to our everyday lives. It makes us better human beings, better spouses, better parents, and most importantly, more obedient children of God. Recently, I was reminded of this as the little bug and I were working on a phonics lesson. When God conceived her in my heart many years ago, her short name was also given to me at that time. However, I had no idea how we would spell it until many years later, or that it was even just that... a short name. It wasn't until 2005 to be exact, that I learned it was short for Ellianna, which means 'God has answered', and would be her God given name from which it was derived. The obvious short name then would be Elli, right? Well, not exactly. According to proper phonics, 'Elli' is incorrect and 'Ellie' is the correct spelling for the correct pronunciation. As we continued with the assignment at hand, we discussed her short name, which she enthusiastically agreed to the idea of adding an 'e' at the tail. In fact, she was quite overjoyed about it! Before she could say anything else however, the conversation dissolved with an emphatic declaration by me, "You don't get to change your long name! That's not up for negotiations!" She smiled big, giggled loud and exclaimed hard, "I know Mom!" Hence, here's to slight changes that are born of not-so-slight phonics lessons. And our sincere apologies to those of you who have already correctly and phonetically scripted an 'e' at the end of her short name, and also to those of you who might be a bit befuddled with the adjustment! We are always learning. Therefore, we are always changing.
